Where are all the doggies going?????

Sat, 26 Jul 2008 23:54:00
I have, this week, had YET ANOTHER call from a concerned Brit living in Altinkum

I have, this week, had YET ANOTHER call from a concerned Brit living in AltinkumWho has noticed that the street dogs are disappearing once again, with no one in authority being able to say where they are going! After many members of the Absolutely Altinkum internet forum site, asked where the dogs were disappearing to, I spoke to Burcin Topal, who is the Belediye liaison officer for the animals, and she informed me that the Belediye are actually collecting the street dogs, because of all the complaints.

This is IN SPITE OF THE MINISTRY AGENT TELLING THEM THEY CANNOT AS IT IS ILLEGAL! But more interesting, when I asked where they were being taken, I was informed, they are being taken to the shelter. NOT TRUE.

To date, since this conversation about 4 weeks ago, NO ALREADY NEUTERED, EAR-TAGGED DOGS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE SHELTER, except those few aggressive ones that were deemed a danger and had to be put down, which amounts to about 6. I asked who was collecting them, and was told, Mehmet, the vet Ali Durmus’s assistant. I called Mehmet to try and throw some light on this matter, and he assured me that he is NOT collecting tagged dogs to take to the shelter.

So, WHO IS, AND WHERE ARE THEY BEING TAKEN? OR ARE THEY BEING KILLED AGAIN….ILLEGALLY????

The caller today said he has lived here for 5 years, and knew for a fact there were 28 dogs on the beaches between the harbour and the Tuntas Hotel at the further end of 2nd beach. He said now there are about 6. He called me to ask where the other 20 or so have gone. Absolutely Altinkum Forum members from all around the resort are concerned that their street friends that they have been feeding and looking out for have disappeared. ‘Choccy’ from the Hilltop bar, who was know to everyone round there, and has been there since before the Hilltop bar was the Hilltop bar, has gone.

What a dear, sweet and loving dog she was. Gone. I have had about 10 calls from concerned residents whose street dogs are no longer there. People already suspect that the council are killing them, as they call me generally to ask if they have turned up at the local shelter, and I have to answer NO.

So, it seems SOMEONE must know something, but of course, no one will admit to culling, as this is illegal and would really be a nationwide scandal, apart from whatever coverage we could get internationally too. There is already a huge internet petition, titled…”Welcome to Turkey, hell on earth for animals” to try and get European Tourists to boycott Turkey as a holiday destination, till something is done about the appalling treatment of animals generally. I still hear of local children setting cats tails alight, chopping off puppies heads as they “ practice “ for when they are ‘men’ and have to sacrifice the sheep, and just a few months ago, someone brought a little puss to the dog shelter who had been put into a bread oven…yes, believe it!!

So WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THE DOG SITUATION??

Unfortunately, absolutely nothing without proof.  So, the Didim Friends of Animals charity members are calling out to all residents of Didim to be especially vigilant. Please carry a camera or camera phone everywhere. If anyone sees anyone catching, shooting, netting, or tranquilising, any dog that already has an ear tag, please photograph or video them.

It may be a Zabita person, or may not, but whoever it is, we NEED PROOF TO STOP IT. Whoever is doing it is doing it very sneakily, in the middle of the night or early morning, when they are not seen. Although one lady did say her husband told her the ‘council men’ came and took a dog away from outside her house one afternoon. She described it to me, but it did not turn up at the shelter. But no proof, as this is only hearsay.

In the meantime, we will suffer the dwindling numbers of our loyal friends once again, while everyone in authority tries to blame ‘local residents’ (what, they poisoned 20 dogs all from the same area??? Yeah!), instead of stopping what they are SEEMINGLY doing, which of course they cannot possible own up to as it is ILLEGAL.

Toby is a one year old male Alsatian cross. We are not sure what he is crossed with, but whatever it was, it had very short legs, as he is a little stumpy fella! He has a Turkish owner at the moment, who loves him to bits, but his neighbours have complained because he is kept in the communal garden, and they don't want him there, so he sadly has to be re-homed. His real name is Kont, but as I see him almost every evening when walking my dogs, I changed it to Toby, as I don't like the sound of Kont!!!

Also, the truly gorgeous pure cocker spaniel at the shelter is still there, and needing a home desperately. She is not a street dog, and has been dumped by someone, probably British, as she seems to understand English. She has a bit of kennel cough at the moment, and the vet says that if she could be taken away from the dog shelter, she would get better much quicker, and then she needs a minor operation on a hernia, which will be paid for by the charity. If anyone can offer her either a permanent home, or even a foster home for a few weeks to help clear up her kennel cough, please contact Gill on 0546 230 0340 or Vet Ali Durmus at Pet Care VETERINARY CLINIC.

The right to live, they have done us proud now they need our help street dogs
By: Grace Fletcher.
How about I come over there and build a bridge on you, they helped us hunt and protect us with there own lives with out being asked, they are loyal to us and protect our children with love and kindness and this is how you's repay they, I hate to think people like you are still around, selfish, greedy, unhumain and most af all still alive to do this damage. The British wouldn't be there doing this if you had taken better care of these animals and done right by mans best friend in the first place. Is there not enough suffering in the world that you do it right on your own door step where you could be making a difference and leading by example. What too much hard work for you is it, I pity you, you don't know the love and joy you are missing out on.

This is wrong these dogs are not wild or nasty as for the person that said build a bridge and get over it what would happen if the brits and other tourists from other countries didn,t go there and didn,t buy apartments over there people knew before they bought places out there that the dogs were there so why make such a fuss now the dogs were there before you as for saying that us tourists want this is wrong we don,t want it the neuter and release system is working out there as I have seen over the past four years there are not so many puppies on the streets and what happen to the saying a dog is man,s best friend some friend we are to the dogs and cats out there it is disgusting cruel and barbaric what is happening to the dogs POISONED,DUMPED AND IF THATS NOT ENOUGH LEFT IN REMOTE PLACES TO STARVE TO DEATH OR DIE OF THIRST

By: EVI
ITS UNBELIEVABLE.

DOGS ARE LIKE HUMANS AND SOMETIMES WITH MORE REAL FEELINGS AND INSTICS THAN US.

THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.

LETS OPEN OUR ARMS AND GIVE THEM THE BEST OF OUR HUG.

THIS IS THE ONLY THING THEY NEED TO BE HAPPY.

THEY JUST NEED TO BE LOVED

Missing Dogs
By: Eloise
I wish with all my heart that I could foster these poor animals, its heartbreaking to know and hear what human kind is capable of, if only they would stand back and see how much they could learn from animals, their love and compassion, something a lot of people (those murdering these poor creatures) will never know but expect it to be shown to them, i say do to them what they are doing to the dogs! Good luck to those of you fighting the good fight, i pray for a miracle!

It is disgusting, abhorrent and cowardly of the Turkish government, the world is watching and many will boycott Turkey, so sad how so few people can totally mess up a good thing. Keep on the fight and the love everyone. Thank you to those who care. Eloise

I find it very sad that the poor dogs are being treated no better than garbage. It is not the fault of these beautiful dogs that they are on the streeets, it is the fault of irresponsible humans. And now so the residents/tourists are not bother by the dogs, they are disappearing. I hope in my heart that they are not being killed, but I have seen how the human race operates and I don't hold out much hope.

Poor creatures
By: Hema Bedasie
These poor creatures were well loved by the residents and now they've mysteriously disappeared. How can they vanish into thin air? Human beings are animals and just as we feel pain and suffering, these dogs can feel pain and suffering. If anyone is harming these creatures in any way, they should remember that what goes around comes around. The truth always comes to light eventually and when it does, I hope those responsible will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

The Life being taken
By: Tanya Castelli
There is no street or wild dogs around...
They are only homeless. A life equal to yours.

Don't expect your tourists to embrase your cruelty.

I am discusted with everyone of you who participated in taking these dogs.

Your attempts to clear the streets will happen, but cleared of people.

Street Dogs
By: Marcia Crow
I wish the very best of luck to all the concerned animal lovers in the area who are trying to monitor this situation to discover where these dogs are disappearing to. If only proof can be found then the perpetrators can be brought to account. If this is, as clearly suspected, 'clean up' operation to aid the tourist trade, then surely those responsible should understand that the capturing and killing of these dogs is not going to encourage decent individuals to holiday in the area. In fact it will have quite the opposite effect. Those involved in this action will almost certainly come across this article and our comments. To them I will say, do not under-estimate the power and passion of animal lovers. If there is a dark secret to uncover, it will be uncovered through will and determination and the consequences may be dire for the tourist trade. Money spent on ridding the area of stray dogs will be much better spent on improving shelter accommodation and neutering. Tourists are happy to see healthy strays roaming around. They are not happy to spend their holidaysand their money in a secret graveyard.

Who could kill such innocent animals. They are as important and have just as much right to live as humans does, if people dont like them being on the street it does not give hem right to kill them then. This is horrifying to think were those poor dogs end up!How can these people be so cruel! Please please stop it!Leave the dogs to be free and rather help them!

killing the dogs
By: patricia williams
i am shocked that the dogs from our area are being taken away and disposed off. the speying of the female will sort the problem out over the strays so until that happens i think the street dogs should have a life on the streets

Shame
By: Gillian Robinson
I am deeply saddened.
I am feel it is a clean up, of some sort - due to the torist trade...but i know this is going have a complete backlash on the industry, word is spreading in regards to the treatment of animals, and the appalling conditions in the shelters - the only shelter that offers proper care for these dogs is the nueter and release programme.
Poeple are already refusing to travel to turkey due to the conditions, and now what i fear it is a barbaric clean up, will just put another nail in turkish toursit industry.
I would urge anyone to take a dog and give it a home, as, as far as i can see they are not safe on the streets and i urge the goverment - who are ultimitley responsible to take immediate action, and invest in decent shelters and adoption programmes.
The programme of nueter and release prevents future stray dogs....the ones that already on the streets need protection - not extermination.
I know some have booked to holiday in turley this year, but many i know will not be returning - myself included - until it is proven where these dogs have gone? and action is taken in protecting these 'freinds'.
Turkish people are always, always so very welcoming to holiday makers, and the turkish country is truly beautiful.....please do not let this spoil Turkey. Please take action.
Thank You

Who does the killing? It is either someone who hates dogs or the government is on a secret mission.
How cruel, how disgusting! I hope that the criminals who do this will be caught and punished.

Altinkums dogs
By: Neesan Sims
I am both shocked and horrified to read this article, And yes, I and my family wish to know what has happened to the missing dogs, We are all regular visitors to Altinkum and we fully support the neuter and release programme at the shelter, We adore the street dogs, they are and always have been for us a huge part of Altinkums charm. We would seriously consider boycotting Turkey altogether should it be proven that these dogs are being taken away and killed.
Anyone interested can sign the petition that Gill has mentioned on this website : http://turkeymassacre.wordpress.com/
I will repost this article on all my websites.
Thank you.
